Biography
Originally from Adelaide, Barnes moved to Sydney in 1937.
KG Murray engaged him to provide cartoons and illustrations, beginning with Man magazine around October 1937. His work appeared in a range of Murray publications, including Man, The Insider (~1939) and probably Cavalcade.
A brief article in Man March 1940, reported that he created 'Gerald', the magazine's regular cartoon about a precocious baby (~1939-1940).
Barnes was one of a number of artists with illustrations in Verses of Frank S. Greenop (KG Murray, ~1944).
Around 1948-1951, Barnes worked for Leisure Productions and H. John Edwards, including the one-shot comic Robin Hood and the backup seafaring adventure 'Roger Farr' in early issues of The Crimson Comet and Tim Valour Comics.
Notes
This is probably not the C.W. Barnes who worked in the composing room for The Brisbane Courier (Qld: 1864-1933) in 1926 (https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/page/1636670).
